Organized by a host of civil rights groups, Freedom Summer brought 800 teachers, ministers, and college students to Mississippi from all over the nation to register black voters and lead Freedom Schools.   On June 21, 1964, activists Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James Chaney set out to investigate the burning of a church that had agreed to host a Freedom School. The three were arrested by Deputy Sheriff Cecil Ray Price, incarcerated in the Neshoba County jail and released in the middle of the night to the Ku Klux Klan. They never returned.   As a young photojournalist, Jim Lucas assisted a CBS news crew during the search for the missing men. His photographs depict the search and the ultimate discovery of the bodies of the murdered workers.
